In Search of Santa Claus:
Myths, Markets, and Meaning in Alsace
A winter wonderland seminar in Strasbourg, France exploring the origins and reinventions of Santa Claus—from sacred saint to stop-motion icon.
In this 7-day global field seminar based in Strasbourg, the “Capital of Christmas,” participants journey through the tangled and magical history of Santa Claus. We trace the evolution of this legendary figure from the real St. Nicholas of Myra to the Germanic gift-giver of old Europe, the mischievous Père Noël of France, and finally to the rosy-cheeked, North Pole-dwelling icon immortalized in 20th-century American media.
The seminar blends historical site visits and cultural excursions with private evening screenings of Rankin/Bass holiday classics like Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. We’ve ordered the showings to run parallel to each day’s theme, using each film to spark a guiding question that deepens the conversation. Together, the Rankin/Bass classics create a narrative arc that leads to our final reflection: Which Santa lives in you? Along the way, we explore how folklore, religion, commerce, and nostalgia shape the story of Santa—and how those meanings continue to evolve in our own lives.
Along the way, we warm ourselves with cups of vin chaud (spiced mulled wine) from Strasbourg’s bustling markets, and delve into the distinctive white wines of Alsace—like Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Crémant—through informal tastings and fireside conversations. These sensory moments offer another lens on holiday tradition: how place, flavor, and story come together in celebration.
But beneath the lights and legends, another story is waiting to be told...
🔎 Operation North Star:
A creative mission embedded in In Search of Santa: Myths, Markets, and Meaning in Alsace
Tucked inside the seminar is an optional creative experience called Operation North Star—a chance for participants to craft their own short story or personal reflection inspired by Santa Claus, Strasbourg, and the magic of winter. Led by a guide with an MFA in creative writing, this “adventure within the seminar” includes two writing workshops and culminates in an optional story-sharing salon on our final night. Whether you're a lifelong writer or just feeling inspired by twinkling lights and mulled wine, you're invited to imagine your own version of Santa—set right here in the heart of Alsace.

We head into the snowy Vosges mountains to visit Mont Sainte-Odile, a sacred mountaintop sanctuary steeped in legend, followed by the storybook town of Obernai, where holiday traditions still echo through cobbled streets and gingerbread-scented air. This is a day to explore the older magic behind the Santa myth—from midwinter rituals and sacred landscapes to the ancient customs that gave rise to early gift-bringer figures long before the North Pole came into view.
As we move between forested hills and festive villages, we reflect on the pre-Santa Christmas—a blend of Christian miracles, folk spirits, and seasonal storytelling. While in Obernai, we gather for a guided tasting of traditional vin chaud, offering our first introduction to the warm spiced wines of the region and the sensory rituals that define the Alsatian winter. This is also a day of breathing room: time for market browsing, quiet reflection, or drafting your story beneath a glowing tree. Day 5 – Santa’s Shadow: Folklore, Fear, and the Christmas Devil
Today we travel to the storybook village of Wissembourg, nestled near the northern edge of Alsace where dense forests meet old borders—and where darker winter legends have taken root for centuries. After time to explore the village’s charming Christmas market and timber-framed lanes, we gather for a brief seminar on European “shadow figures”—from Père Fouettard and Knecht Ruprecht to the terrifying Hans Trapp, Alsace’s own Christmas bogeyman.
These tales remind us that Santa wasn’t always a jolly solo act. For generations, he traveled with companions who punished instead of rewarded, frightened instead of comforted. Through this lens, we ask: What does a culture gain—or lose—when its myths evolve toward cheer and away from consequence?
To balance the shadows with warmth, we then enjoy a curated tasting of regional Alsatian wines, including Gewürztraminer and Riesling—aromatic varietals that have long accompanied winter gatherings in this region. In the late afternoon, participants in Operation North Star reconvene for our second writer’s workshop, revising and polishing stories ahead of our final sharing salon.
