Inside Operation Courrier
A Message Carried West

Operation Courrier is an immersive layer woven into From Maquis to Médoc, a subtle, unfolding experience that follows the river from forest encampment to port city.

Set against the wooded valleys of the Dordogne and concluding upon arrival in Bordeaux, Operation Courrier invites participants to step into the role of civilian couriers in 1944. Information could not travel openly. It moved in fragments — carried along ridges, across river crossings, and through market towns before reaching its destination downstream.

Drawing on the geography we move through each day, participants receive fragments of a transmission that cannot be understood in isolation. A clue encountered in the forest may only make sense along the river. A phrase heard in a medieval town may resolve itself as we approach the wide waters of the Garonne.

Operation Courrier is a reflective parallel journey — an invitation to read the landscape and consider how terrain shaped movement, secrecy, and survival.

As we travel west, the message evolves. It gathers meaning as the river widens. And it resolves upon our arrival in Bordeaux, where the transmission reaches its end and the journey opens into the city at leisure.

Whether you choose to participate or simply observe, Operation Courrier offers a deeper way of experiencing the path from Maquis to Médoc.

You’ll be encouraged to consider:

How does a message move when it cannot be written plainly?
Where does concealment end and exposure begin?
What does geography make possible?

How the Operation Works

  • On Day 2, participants are invited (never required) to join Operation Courrier and receive the first fragment of a westward-bound transmission.

  • Throughout the seminar, you’ll receive additional fragments at key locations — in the forest, along the river corridor, and at sites shaped by confinement and control.

  • Each fragment stands on its own, but gains meaning as we move geographically from east to west.

  • During our transfer to Bordeaux, participants who choose to engage will assemble the fragments in the order the river flows, completing the transmission upon arrival.

Why it matters:

Operation Courrier is about tracing movement. It invites you to consider how messages once traveled through terrain when they could not be spoken openly. Forest cover, river crossings, village markets, and port cities were more than just backdrops; they shaped possibility.

As we move from wooded ridges to the wide waters of Bordeaux, you’ll reflect on how geography influences risk, trust, concealment, and exposure. Operation Courrier asks:

How does information move when it cannot travel plainly?
What does a river carry — and what does it reveal?
When does quiet movement become visible consequence?

A Sample Transmission:

📍 Day 4: Maquis de Durestal

Location: Forest ridge above the Dordogne Valley
Date: Spring 1944

Fragment II:

“Where the ridge bends toward the water, carry only what cannot be written.
The road is watched. The river remembers.”

You are told nothing more.

Later, along the river corridor, another fragment appears, and the instruction begins to shift. The words you received in the forest feel incomplete. They require direction. They require movement.

As the seminar unfolds, you’ll discover that a message cannot travel intact. It must be divided, trusted to others, and carried west.

Operation Courrier concludes upon arrival in Bordeaux, when the fragments align and the transmission is finally read.
